Our Tanker 18-39 is a member of this regional task force and took part in the training exercise.

During the drill, crews utilized one of the two portable ponds carried on Tanker 18-39. Portable ponds play a critical role at fire scenes in areas without hydrants by providing a temporary water supply for fire apparatus. Tankers shuttle water from a fill site to the fire scene, where the water is dumped into portable ponds and then drafted by engines to provide a continuous water supply for firefighting operations.

A tanker assignment is often one of the most important resources on a rural or non-hydranted fire scene. Establishing and maintaining an uninterrupted water supply is essential for protecting lives, property, and supporting firefighters operating on the fireground. Without a reliable water source, fire suppression efforts can be significantly impacted.

Training like this allows firefighters and drivers to practice various tanker shuttle operations, improve efficiency, identify challenges before they occur at an actual emergency, and ensure equipment and personnel are prepared when called upon. Every fire scene is different, and regularly training on multiple methods of water movement helps crews adapt quickly and effectively to changing conditions.

As with any training, unexpected challenges can arise. During the exercise, Tanker 18-39 experienced a mechanical issue that took the apparatus out of service for the remainder of the drill. While equipment failures are never ideal, they can and do occur during real emergencies. Situations like this reinforce the importance of training, as crews must be prepared to overcome unexpected obstacles, adjust operations, and continue accomplishing the mission despite setbacks. These real-world lessons help ensure firefighters are better prepared when responding to actual emergencies.

We thank all agencies involved for hosting and participating in this valuable training opportunity.
